SUMPUR KUDUS, Indonesia — On a mud-soaked night in November 2025, a man dropped to his knees in a West Sumatran rainforest and wept. Septian “Deki” Andriki, a former elementary school physical education teacher turned self-taught botanist, had just found what he spent 13 years chasing: a living Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic flower unseen in the wild for more than a decade.
The moment came after a day-long trek through tiger-inhabited forest in Sijunjung Regency, following a tip from a local resident. Andriki, along with Oxford Botanic Garden’s Chris Thorogood and BRIN researcher Joko Ridho Witono, pushed through dense jungle as phone batteries dwindled. When they reached the site, a blood-red bloom with white speckles was unfurling. “After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” Andriki later said. “I just cried.”
The footage of a grown man sobbing before a flower ricocheted across Indonesian, British, and American media. But the viral moment belied a serious scientific achievement. Rafflesia hasseltii is one of roughly 42 species in the bizarre, chlorophyll-free genus that lives hidden inside host vines for years, bursting into bloom only briefly—producing meter-wide, carrion-scented flowers to attract flies. The rediscovery is part of a multinational research effort led by the University of Oxford, collecting DNA from dozens of rafflesia variants across Indonesia to understand the plant’s erratic blooming cycle and improve conservation.
The Wider Hunt: 200 New Species a Year
The Sumatran rediscovery is the most dramatic example of a far larger enterprise. At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists describe roughly 200 new plant species annually—about one in every 10 named worldwide. In 2025, the Garden highlighted ten standout finds, including a Costa Rican moonlight cactus that took 20 years to bloom.
Tropical entomologist William Haber handed a cutting from an unusual cactus to curator Barry Hammel two decades ago, suspecting it was distinct. Hammel kept the cutting through retirement, waited until the plant flowered in his Costa Rican yard, and confirmed a new species in the genus Selenicereus. Other 2025 discoveries include an endangered sapodilla-relative found on Madagascar’s sand dunes and a new persimmon species named for a late Garden botanist.
At the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, botanists published nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus in 2025. Among the most striking finds: a new subgenus of Vitis—the grapevine genus—based on two threatened Mexican wild grapes with red flowers. It is the first such subgenus recognized in nearly a century.
Discovery in Unexpected Places
Not all breakthroughs require jungle expeditions. In Texas’ Big Bend National Park, volunteer botanist Deb Manley spotted small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers growing between rocks. She photographed them and uploaded the images to iNaturalist. Expert identification led to an entirely new genus, nicknamed the “wooly devil”—the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.
In Hawaii, researchers used a drone with a robotic collecting arm to reach an inaccessible cliff on Kauai. The drone returned with samples of a new carnation-family plant, Schiedea waiahuluensis, likely the first new species ever discovered by drone.
Racing Dark Extinction
These discoveries tell two stories. One is of persistence and luck. The other is sobering: many newly described plants are already among the rarest on Earth, restricted to single slopes, dunes, or cliffs—and already threatened by logging or development.
Naming a species is not academic, botanists argue. It is the prerequisite for any legal protection or conservation funding. A plant without a name has no defense. For Rafflesia hasseltii, the rediscovery gives researchers data to push for safeguards in forests where most known populations remain outside protected areas.
Scientists estimate thousands of plant species remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition—a phenomenon called dark extinction. Each year’s tally is not just an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race against time, run one cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
